Mental Health and Herbal Teas

Ayurvedic herbal teas are a go to remedy for many ailments, but did you know that beyond the physical benefits, it is also known to have positive effects on mental health. More often than not, the soothing sensation of a hot cuppa tea can be enough on its own to drop those shoulders, take a deep breath and relax back into a comfy sofa. But there is more! Many herbal teas consist of natural compounds that help regulate the body’s stress response; and promote feelings of relaxation and calmness.

You are probably wondering which of these natural compounds can work such magical powers, and it probably wouldn’t surprise you to hear that Lavender and Chamomile are amongst some of the top favourites; and yet, there are more we don’t often hear about, as they are not so easily obtained in our regular supermarkets.

Take for instance Holy Basil (Tulsi), this famous herb of India is used from the seeds to the leaves, meaning nothing goes to waste. This special little herb has antidepressant and anti-anxiety properties that are comparable to diazepam. But the best part about Holy Basil, is it comes straight from Mother Earth and not your local lab.

By calming the mind, you are also helping your sleep patterns. A decent night sleep allows the mind to make sense of the day’s events, by filing them away for us to retrieve later. Herbal teas with ingredients such as Chamomile, Lemongrass and of course Lavender Blossoms have been shown to help calm the mind and aid in getting a good night sleep.

A calm mind and a good night sleep combined can lead us to have better cognitive function. Furthermore, Herbal teas with ingredients such as Ashwagandha and Basil, contain composites that have a positive effect on brain health, therefore are able to reduce the risk of age-related cognitive decline. But the most important part about drinking herbal teas, is the sense of comfort it brings us. Anything that provides a sense of calmness in this busy world is worth enjoying, especially when it is proven to reduce anxiety levels brought on by stress.

Try incorporating herbal tea into your daily routine, so you too can get a good night sleep and enjoy the many mental health benefits it can bring us.
